Output 1

Development of the structure and content of the Integrated Curriculum for applied genetics studies with the following chapters:
  • Epidemiology
  • Genetics
  • Applied Statistics in Genetic Data Analysis
  • Elements of Data Science – Infrastructure
  • Elements of Data Engineering – Databases
  • Ethical Concerns in Research with Human Subjects
  • Ethics of Scientific Publication.

This content was created to be delivered both in face-to-face format as presentations in Summer School and as e-Learning material for the Online School.

All the materials have been collected and edited as a printed book and published with title “AppGenEdu – An Integrated Approach for the Bioinformatics Training” under ISBN 978-606-792-045-1. – More

Output 2

The first format of delivery for the newly created content was the Summer School that took place in July 2019 for 3 weeks with 30 selected students. The courses were based on the integrated curriculum that was tuned for in-person delivery and the labs and workshops used genetic data anonymised for research and collected in previous EAA funded projects (Romcan). The in-person content delivery session ended with a capstone project where groups of students had the chance to apply directly the learned concepts. – More…

Output 3

The Online Training Modules, including the mentoring sessions, were based on the same content delivered in the Summer School, tuned this time for e-Learning methods of training and delivered over a 3 months period. Each session ended with a capstone project similar with the one ran in Summer School. During the on-line training instances the courses and workshops were delivered via a specialized Learning Management System – Easy-LMS – delivered through a cloud platform with facilities for content navigation, progress evaluation and tracking of student activities. This LMS platform was used together with a set of video-meeting application for live interactions between trainers and students, for guidance and mentoring. – More…

The methodological article was written based on the experience gained by delivering the applied genetics content, via 2 different methods, to a Romanian student audience, covering the particularities of implementation and proposing few best practices for applied genetics trainings. The title of the article is: “Considerations on the Results Evaluation of the Genetic Epidemiology Training of AppGenEdu Project” and was published in Romanian Journal of Legal Medicine, in June 2021. – More...

During the project timeframe, the team published 3 articles that presents GWAS studies in investigation of nephrolithiasis and hypertension, as follows: More…

    • “Genome-wide Association Study of Nephrolithiasis in an Eastern European Population”, in International Urology and Nephrology, a Springer publication, August 2020 – More…
    • “Genetic markers for hypertension – a genetic epidemiological study of 5000 Romanian individuals”, in European Heart Journal, November 2020 – More
    • “The genetic landscape of hypertension – results from a 5690 Romanian individuals”, in European Journal of Human Genetics, December 2020 – More…

Output 6

During the project the best results of the capstone projects, where students from Summers School and from Online School, under the supervision of the academic staff used the knowledge acquired during the training to produce their own scientific papers, were captured in a set of scientific papers. The datasets used came from the ROMCAN project and participants were guided through by the academic and scientific staff of the participants’ institutions on how to use and process the data and how to present the results. The title of the papers are:

  1. Rare Genetic Variants Associated with Lung Cancer in a Romanian Population, ICHAMS2020 – More…
  2. Identification Of Genetic Variants Associated With Arterial Hypertension in A Hospital‐based Romanian Cohort From ROMCAN Project, Congress of „Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, November 2020 – More…
